The San Francisco Independent Filmmaker- Talk about town-

Things are about to happen in Santa Cruz this upcoming summer. I got a chance to meet William Scherer of Santa Cruz, at the big Tannery Arts Center open house this past weekend and I must say he is quite an extraordinary person with a very interesting background. Having previously resided in Hollywood for fifteen years as an actor and writer, he is now making his joyful return to the theatrical world with his independent feature film “House on Rodeo Gulch” that he wrote and is directing.

I know it’s a scary psychological thriller but when I probed him further about the hush hush ending he would only tell me- “have you ever tried to get a tenant out of your rental property and they didn’t want to move”? I asked him if I could have a quick look at the script and he told me “sorry, you’re just gonna have to wait like everyone else for it to come out.” This, folks, is one movie project I’m going to keep my eye on!

The San Francisco Independent Filmmaker- Talk about town-

There is nothing worst than a “spat” with your fiance’, especially when she is in the wrong and won’t admit it. At least I think she was in the wrong. The good news is the frustration allowed me to get out of the city and ride my motorcycle down to Santa Cruz to see how William Scherer was doing with his low budget thriller, House on Rodeo Gulch. As a frustrated film maker myself, I really have to hand it to guys that make the big leap and jump into the trenches of starting a full length feature movie with a low budget. I guess I see a little of myself in him but are too afraid to take the leap. After getting the okay from William, he gave me the address of his secret filming location and I hit the road heading south.

Santa Cruz is a pretty exciting beach town but when you get into the out skirts and encounter the giant redwood trees you find yourself in a whole different beautiful part of the world. The winding road leading up to his filming location was one of the most beautiful roads I have ever driven. Lined on both sides by hundreds of tall redwoods, one feels like they are almost entering the Garden of Eden. Maybe I might find a fiance’ that was a little more reasonable here deep in the forest?

The house used in this film is totally out in the middle of nowhere and is surrounded by tall redwoods.  I could run around nude, scream my heart out and no one would ever see or hear me. I don’t know if my body is that exciting but I think you get the point. William met me by his spa with his two attractive teenage actors, Emery Morgan and Maureen Bach. Both were delightful and very professional but it was Morgan’s beauty that made me take a second… and third look. This is one young actress who is going to shake up a lot of viewers when this film makes it to the screen. Talk about presence….  When I arrived they were filming a scene with a large six foot snake that was new to acting and couldn’t take directions very well. “Hazel” was very temperamental. Yes, the snake’s name was Hazel and I might also mention… non union which probably explained why she couldn’t take directions very well. The snake was supposed to slither across the spa deck, then enter the water next to Emery’s arm. William explained that the python wouldn’t bite her because it just ate two days ago and that breed only eats once a month. The sight of the snake scared the hell out of me but Emery and Maureen found Hazel amusing as they wrapped her around their necks. I guess women get along better than men. Figure. After the tenth take Hazel began earning her pay and to watch William work with his camera was very interesting.  Part 2 will continue next week-

(SANTA CRUZ, Calif) William Scherer has always craved adventure, excitement and setting goals that might seem completely crazy, even to his own family, but he always succeeds. His latest endeavor involves going back to his show business roots with his first feature film written, directed and edited all by Mr. Scherer himself. House on Rodeo Gulch is a suspense thriller meant to provoke the audience and keep them guessing as the story about a young mother and her daughter who move into a house owned by a seeming peaceful minister unfolds. William took film-editing classes from the local community college, Cabrillo, to master the special effects featured throughout his film.

William lives by the saying, “Always ask, the worst they can say is no, and you will have lost nothing.” Bill followed his motto and moved to Hollywood fresh out of VMI, his screen plays were immediately picked up by Universal among many others.
